Showbox Theater
Originated in 1939, Seattle's Showbox Theater is considered among the towns handful of existing amusement venues that can lay claim to having provided local music fans such an amazing span of music over the decades. From the Jazz Age to the Grunge period, the storied ballroom has featured shows by touring icons like Duke Ellington, Muddy Waters, and the Ramones - in addition to those by home-based faculties ranging from parody queen, Gypsy Rose Lee, to Pearl Jam. even though the Showbox has had its vicissitudes in the past, today it remains vigorous as a noteworthy contributor to Seattle's music scene.
All through the time, the Show Box has had its vagaries - the lowest point almost certainly being when it was converted into a furniture showroom during the "62 World's Fair" but it managed to endure by going with the flow and developing with the changing times. Thus at the same time as it provided entertainment as a dime-a-dance joint for off-duty soldiers and war fatigued citizens all through WWII, it also played a noteworthy role throughout the late-60s when it was transformed into a psychedelic retreat called The Happening Teenage Nite Club with performances by local hippie bands as the Magic Fern, the Daily Flash, Peece, and West Coast Natural Gas. in the late-70s though, Seattle's club scene had gotten all swamped with jumbling up Country Rock combos and funky Motown-tribute bands and little elbow-room was being made for the newest trends in music. But after that, immediately within a decade a new sponsorship organization, Modern Productions, revealed that the Show Box - at that moment being availed from time to time as the Talmud Torah Hebrew Academy Bingo Hall - was obtainable at rent out and consequently, virtually every new rock act out on tour was being brought to town. And accordingly, the exposure to all the new sounds and ideas presented by supplementary influential Punk Era acts - with Iggy Pop, the Ramones, Devo, X, and the Dead Kennedys, the local scene was enormously stimulated and revitalized. One unambiguous outcome was that scores of new local bands counting the Blackouts, the Enemy, the Debbies, Solger, the Wipers, the Fastbacks, the Cowboys, the Pudz, the Fartz, the Refuzers, and the Accident, got magnificent chance to play for big crowds at the Showbox. Most prominently however, all thanks to the momentous measure to the Showbox, the path was paved for the gradually rising Seattle's imaginative and booming (grunge) rock and hip-hop communities that the pop culture world links Seattle with to this day. And that’s just not it; The Showbox has also hosted many benefit shows, movie debuts, Hip-hop concerts, and countless record release parties. The outstanding history of this ballroom is still worth describing - undeniably, history is still being written at the Showbox Music Club every night.
