Lincoln Center of the performing arts came into existence as a part of Lincoln Square Renewal Project carried out by numerous civic leaders.

Its construction was carried out during 1960s during urban renewal program by Robert Moses. Presently, Lincoln Center hosts more than 400 performing arts events every year, which include the Mostly Mozart Festival, Lincoln Center Festival, Live from Lincoln Center (also the recipient of an Emmy Award), American Song book, Midsummer Night Swing and Lincoln Center out of Doors.

Lincoln Center also took a new initiative in July 2006, when it joined forces with John Wiley & Sons Inc. to publish around 15 books round the year, based on performing arts and education.

Metropolitan Lincoln Center houses 7 performance facilities including Alice Tully Hall, The Metropolitan Opera House, Mitzi E. Newhouse Theatre, Avery Fisher Hall, David H. Koch Theater, the Walter Reade Theatre and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Jazz at Lincoln Center is located adjacent to Columbus Center and with in Time Warner Center, however it is still a part of Lincoln Center.

Jazz at Lincoln Center houses The Allen Room, Rose Theatre, Dizzy"s Club Coca Cola, and Irene Diamond Education center, and was opened on October 18, 2004.
