Music that is peaceful and it sooths the ears and mind of one is known as New Age Music. This tuneful music, encompassing a variety of styles, intends to generate stimulation, relaxation, along with positive feelings while the listener is listening to it. Primarily, it is instrumental. Originating during the 1970s, New Age Music, today, is considered as a very valuable constituent of Stress Management. Mostly, the New Age Music albums are listened to during meditation, yoga, inspiration, massage, resting, etc.
The definitions of the term New Age Music according to an online dictionary, called Wiktionary, is as follows:
genre of music of a mystical nature, associated with New Age philosophies.
A genre of relaxing music with elements of world music.
Thus, it can be said that New Age Music is contemplative and spiritual in nature. This form of music is for reflection, thinking, stretching, and also for de-stressing and resting. Other than helping in stress management, New Age Music is also useful for creating a peaceful atmosphere in the home or environments connected with New Age Spirituality and environmentalism.
Including both electronic forms and acoustic forms, New Age Music, in addition to a diverse range of non-western acoustic instruments, usually features a few typical instruments like piano, flutes, synthesizer, found sounds, harp, sitar, and acoustic guitar, along with folk and ethnic instruments. The New Age Music compositions are commonly consonant and modal, and they also include a drone bass, resulting in creating a hypnotic feeling for the listener, due the repetitive melodies. No heavy rhythms, complex harmonies, harsh sounds and virtuosic exhibit would be ever found in this category of music, as the focus here is not on the musician or composer of the songs, but it is instead on creating music that meets the psychological needs of the listener. The songs are usually of 30 minutes duration in New Age Music albums.
New Age Music initially emerged due to of experimentation by a variety of 60's and 70's European and American electronic and acoustic composers who were exploring music, in order to produce extended consciousness. Reacting to the free-form virtuosic music, popular at the time, the jazz and rock musicians discovered new meditative genres of music. The term New Age Music got introduced far and wide to the public, first by radio stations, and then by music retailers and a few record companies. The opening and original New Age radio station to open not only in the U.S., but also in the entire world, was KLRS (meaning Colors) in Santa Cruz, California.
There are many New Age Music Artists, such as Australis, Philip Aaberg, Brian Eno, Ron Allen, Karunesh, Kenny G, Tim Blake, and many more. The most important artist of early new age music, however, is perhaps Stephen Halpern, as he began to create music that was purely intended for meditation and reflection during the early 70s. Unfortunately, Halpern couldn't find a record company to produce his music, so he published it himself, and marketed through New Age stores, including health food stores, yoga gyms, and other places that sold world clothing, incense, and spiritual items.
Initially, vocal arrangements were exceptional in New Age Music, but today, after the evolution of this form of music, vocals have become more common. The most common vocals feature Sanskrit, Tibetan/Native American-influenced mantras, or lyrics which are based on mythology, such as, Celtic legends or the realm of Faerie. Unlike the early 70s, when it was generally instrumental with both acoustic and electronic styles, the New Age Music at present includes a large variety of styles that range from electronic space music to acoustic instrumentals, using Western instruments to spiritual chanting from other cultures.
