Football is perhaps one of the most popular sports of all times. From big stadiums and small streets, to FIFA and NCAA; the craze and magic of football is spread all over the world. The super-exciting sport is as popular in schools, colleges and universities as it is anywhere else. That's why, the popularity of College Football has been growing with every passing year and it is ranked among top-selling sports in America.

College Football is one of the most dominant sports traditions of today. In America, this sport is followed by millions of fans and thousands of people are related to this industry. Sometimes referred to as all-American past-time, college football got widespread recognition many years ago. The sport traces its roots from rugby that was very popular in England in the early 1800's. However, there is a huge difference between the rules and method of these two games.

The first documented intercollegiate football game was played in New Brunswick, New Jersey on November 6, 1869. Princeton and Rutgers Universities faced each other in the game that featured no referee or sports official and 25 players on each side if a huge field. This no-referee tradition continued until 1876 when the rules started to change gradually.

Over the course of next few years, college football adopted new changes and norms. An egg-shaped leather ball took the place of round ball; number of players was reduced to 15 so as the size of the field; players started wearing helmets; and referees became an indispensible part of the game in order to avoid brawls and cheats.

By 1870s, football teams from many colleges and universities were actively involved in the sport; each following different rules and regulations. This resulted in the formation of Intercollegiate Football Association that formalized the set of rules for this sport. Initiated by Universities of Harvard and Yale, the rules set by this organization were soon adopted by all the major college football teams.

One of the major contributors to college football is Walter Camp. This player from Yale University worked closely with Intercollegiate Football Association to upgrade the pattern of the game. He established base for modern day college football back in 1880. Despite his continuous efforts, the sport witnessed reluctant support because of the deaths and injuries occurred to football players during the games.

With the formation of NCAA or National Collegiate Athletic Association, the 'unsafe' tag was permanently removed from the face of college football. What started as a seven-member Rules Committee decided by 60 plus schools became the parent organization for college football all over America. The game itself rose to great heights and the play of young and fresh talent soon won the hearts of football lovers.

Today, College football is celebrated all over United States not only for the excitement and thrill, but for the tradition and history it holds. As a symbol of American athletics, the sport is played in hundreds of colleges and universities playing in different leagues of NCAA. Hardly any mainstream school is missing on a football team of its own.

NCAA categorizes the College football teams into divisions and conferences on the basis of location, size and other specifications. They encounter each other in different championships throughout the year. NCAA holds Division I (FCS), Division II and Division III. The FCS is the highest division to hold a playoff tournament to determine the champion.

The phenomenon of College football is incomplete without mentioning BCS or Bowl Championship Series. The top two college football teams are pitted against each other in this championship and the winner is declared a national champion. NCAA does not hold a tournament for this form but still teams from Division I FBS participate in this format and the Bowl Games it hosts.

Talking about college football, we have seen some of the greatest moments of sports during its games. The teams and players, on the other hand, give tough competition to other athletic teams on the basis of Name, Fame and Game. Notre Dame, Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Southern California and Texas are considered the all times champions of college football. In recent years, the later three along with Louisiana State University and Florida have won major titles.

An overlook at top bowl teams from the world of College Football reveals that USC, Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida State, Auburn, Mississippi, Georgia Tech and Penn State have clinched top positions. However, unpredictability is the essence of College Football and the changing positions in points tables always keep you guessing about the next champ.

The sense of belonging and affiliation makes College football a sport of die-hard fans. You can hardly see a student or alumni of one university supporting some other team. Adding to this are famous rivalries of Ohio State vs Michigan, Army vs Navy, Alabama vs Auburn, Oklahoma vs Texas and others that raise the excitement even further. All this makes College Football one of the most amazing sports of its kind.

College Football and everything associated with it is looked after and governed by the NCAA. The entire structure is divided into three divisions with Division I being the premier category and the one which attracts the most interest. The sport can trace its roots way back to 1890s. James Naismith is credited by many to being the person who came up with Football in 1891. He was handed the task of creating a less physical sport which would keep athletes in proper condition. 21st December, 1891 is said to be the day when Football took the courts for the very first time.

Thirty two conferences and three hundred and forty seven colleges combine to complete the College Football NCAA Division I structure. The NCAA Men's Division I Football Championship is the most prestigious competition and the winner of the tournament is widely regarded to be the national champion. It is however not the first College Football tournament to be established, that distinction goes to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).

NIT began proceedings in 1938 and is still being played today which makes it the oldest Football tournament in the country. The tournament was the brainchild of the Metropolitan Football Writers Association. The inaugural edition was won by the Temple Owls who beat the Colorado Buffalos.

The NCAA Men's Division I Football Championship began one year later in 1939. It was a manifestation of an idea conceived by Harold Olsen, the coach of the Ohio State University. The competition is also fondly known as the "Big Dance" and "March Madness" by the Football fraternity. It is also the most watched college level Football competition in the country today. One of the biggest reason for this is the fact that it has an elimination based format.  There are no second chances; one bad game and you are out. The sudden death nature keeps the teams on their toes which forces them to bring their A game to the table, anything less is simply not good enough.

Out of the thirty two conferences, thirty one conference champions get automatic entry into the competition. Another thirty seven gain entry via invitation by the special selection committee formed by the NCAA. The entire field of sixty eight College Football teams are then categorized and put into four different regions. Every region has a minimum of seven teams each.

The NCAA committee then starts the process of seeding every side. The four top teams are seeded the highest and are sent to lead their respective regions. The next four best teams get second seeds in every region and the process is followed till every team is seeded. This information is kept private and hidden from the public to make it all more intriguing. The winner of the first region takes on the team that tops the fourth region in the semis for the chance to headline the final. The triumphant teams from other two regions go head to head in the other semi.

The venues are decided well in advance and in such a way that no team gets the advantage of playing at their home court before the "Final Four" round. The selection of arenas once completed is final and cannot be changed under any circumstances. The elimination format also gives the underdogs a chance to upset the odds and beat a big side as has happened countless times before.

UCLA leads the College Football title count by being crowned champions eleven times. They are followed by the University of Kentucky who has seven titles to its name. Third spot is shared by Indiana University and the University of North Carolina with five championships each.

The College Football title is up for grabs again and sixty eight of the best sides in the country will give all they have got to be crowned the best in the nation. The format makes every tie intriguing which adds that extra dimension to the proceedings. The competition is not too far now so book your College Football tickets and catch the action live.
