History of Sports in N. America
The history of sports in North America dates back to the times of the Native Americans. They used to play a different version of some of the popular sports of today. Those included lacrosse and field hockey. Then early Dutch settlers during colonial times started a form of bowling at New York City's bowling green. Those were just a few contests but the more elaborate and organized competitions started in the late 19th century after schools and colleges initiated balanced programs to encourage athletics. Also, as part of their efforts to discipline young people, organizations such as the Young Men's Christian Association and Boy Scouts started sponsoring sports. With an awareness and concern about diet and exercise during the late nineteenth century Americans started focusing more and more on sports as a means of relaxation as well as recreation. Starting in the latter part of the 19th century, team sports like football, basketball, baseball and ice hockey became common and were being played at college levels. By early twentieth century, all these sports got very professional. Various championships and tournaments took roots with a lot of investment by the private business owners. With the popularity of TV in the latter half of twentieth century, more Americans watched sports on television turning the sports industry into a massive business.
Today there are all sorts of new and unusual sports such as bungee jumping, wind surfing, hang gliding etc. But the toppers have remained the team sports like baseball, hockey, football and basketball.
