Boxing is a phenomenon that started thousands of years ago. While its exact roots are still unknown, many historians believe that boxing started in Greece, Rome and North Africa as earlier as 4000 B.C. It remained a prominent part of human culture in one form or another for many centuries. However, it was in the 18th century when Boxing emerged in England as a workingman's sport.

The credit of being one of the earliest boxing stars goes to James Figg who remained a heavyweight champion from 1719 till 1730. However, Boxing of that time was quite different from what we now see in the ring. The rules and patterns of present day boxing were formed under Marquess of Queensberry rules in 1867. It introduces 3-minute rounds while gloves are made mandatory for the boxers. Also, since boxing is essentially a 'fighting between two players using fists', hence elements of wrestling were eliminated from the game with the passage of time.

Now after a century or more since the introduction of the Marquess of Queensbury rules, boxing has grown into one of the most professional and popular sports of the world. Today, boxers from different countries and regions play under different categories while the following of this sport has also spread all over the world.

A typical boxing encounter sees two boxers fighting each other in a series of rounds. They have to use their fists to punch the opponent in order to earn the point. The point score is dependent on how well they make contact with the opponent. The fight ends with either of the boxers winning the most points or knocking down the opponent.

Boxing is categorized in eight different weight classes. The lightest weight category is called flyweight while heaviest is known as heavyweight. The boxers always face the opponent of their own weight category while the forms of event also vary accordingly.

Currently, two basic forms of Boxing can be seen and enjoyed. These are Professional Boxing and Amateur boxing. Usually, each round of professional boxing lasts for three minutes while the duration decreases to two minutes for amateur boxing. Professional Boxing is the main stream boxing and it has a wide fan following. The Amateur Boxing, introduced as a modern Olympic sport in 1904, mostly serves as a launch pad for professional boxing. The highest prize in this form is the Olympic Gold medal. The world of professional boxing is full of high profile events and different championships that provide thrills to boxing fans throughout the year.

Since Boxing is recognized world-wide, several associations and organizations work for the regulation of this sport. Some of these include International Boxing Federation, World Boxing Association, World Boxing Council, The Ring, AIBA and World Boxing Organization. The International Boxing Hall of Fame acknowledges the greatest talent of the boxing world. New inductees are announced in December every year while the official induction takes place in June in the Hall of Fame Weekend.
