The history of Saratoga Race Course dates back to August 1863, when it was built by William Travers, Leonard Jerome, and John Hunter. The facility opened with a race before a crowd of 500, while the first thoroughbred to have won the race at the Saratoga"s race track was Lizzie W.

A year later, the Travers Stakes was introduced and is now considered as the country"s primeval stake race. The Travers Stakes celebrated the week-long Travers Festival that would draw a large number of people to the region each season.

Travers Festival"s major attractions include several events, the Travers Ball bring the most notable. Last quarter of the nineteenth century saw the Saratoga Race Course suffering a slump.

During this time, the horse racing fans were split between this race course and the new Monmouth race track in New Jersey. Later, Saratoga race track was closed in 1911 and remained dark until after World War II.

Saratoga Race Course reopened in 1946 and celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 1963. Following 100th anniversary were numerous enhancements to the facility which weren"t less than a delight for the race track"s countless fans.

To-day, Saratoga Race Course is also known by its monikers: The Spa and the Graveyard of Favorites. The facility management is dedicated to making horse races, festivals and events memorable.
