Opened in New York in 1924 by Irwin Chanin, it was known as 46th Street Theater. The Greenwich Village Follies became the first presentation here premiered on Dec 24, 1924. The Depression era badly affected theatres in America 46th Street Theater also become its victim. It became impossible for Chanin to run the theatre smoothly thus he gave up control in 1932 and Shuberts took over. The decade of 1990"s gave rebirth to the 46th Street Theater. It got new life on March 27, 1990 when it was renamed as Richard Rodgers Theatre. The name was given to honor the services of composer Richard Rodgers who worked for Broadway for over thirty years.
Interestingly, out of the thirty plus musicals that Richard Rodgers worked on, only one made it to the previously titled 46th Street Theatre. The musical "Do I Hear a Waltz?" was staged there in 1965.
In order to keep pace with changing trends and increasing requirements for theatres, Richard Rodgers Theatre went on a refurbishment phase in 2006. It was meant to equip the playhouse with all the modern amenities and state-of-the-art sound and lightning system.
