However, following the Great Depression, the theatre was shut down in 1944. In the 1950"s, it was reopened as a television studio and a decade later it returned to its previous glory as the premium theatre venue of the city.

With revival and new spirit, the theatre also got a new name and is called Brooks Atkinson Theatre since then, in honor of the famed New York Times drama critic, Brooks Atkinson.

Over the years, Brooks Atkinson Theatre has maintained the standard of quality programming and good service. It has been renovated from time to time in order to keep up with changing times.

The one renovation in 2000 was especially praised as it brought back the original chandelier that had been removed forty years ago. If the 1960"s brought theatrical gems like Come Blow Your Horn, Halfway Up the Tree, Man and Boy and Pulitzer Prize classic The Green Pastures; the 1970"s included classics like The River Niger, Of Mice and Men and Same Time, Next Year.

In the 1980"s, the Brooks played a series of notable productions like Aren"t We All, Noises Off, Ghosts, The Dresser, Jackie Mason"s The World According to Me and Lanford Wilson"s Pulitzer Prize play, Talley"s Folly, starring Judd Hirsch and Trish Hawkins.

Other productions that brought visitors to the venue in huge numbers include The Look of Love, Medea, Jane Eyre, The Rainmaker, Wait Until Dark, Taking Sides, Buried Child and The Cemetary Club.
