Founded in 1951, it has gone on to become a venue that not only plays host to sports games but also to concerts and other similar events. It is located on the campus of the University of Kansas, who own and operate the university. Its surface is hardwood with a capacity of over sixteen thousand, though it has been known to hold over seventeen thousand people. It has also played host to the likes of President Bill Clinton and Robert F. Kennedy. Founded in 1951, construction on the venue started in 1952, with the arena opening up to the public in 1955.

A number of renovations have taken place on this indoor arena, such as increasing seating capacity and adding modern amenities, as well as improving accessibility. Concession stands, restrooms and elevators have been added, as well as handicapped seating. Used initially for indoor track and field, volleyball, softball and even football, it is today mostly used for basketball games. In 2005, renovations added the Booth Family Hall of Athletics, as well as a hardwood court and a video board with sound system costing millions of dollars.
