Built by the Warner Brothers Studios, the theatre opened in the year 1931, as part of the Warner Brothers' chain of movie theatres. It was known as 'Connecticut's Most Beautiful Theatre,' at the time. The building was designed by Thomas Lamb. The Warner emerged as a competing entertainment site against the existing centers like the Alhambra Theater and the Palace Theatre. Soon it became known as the city's largest and most modern theatre. It was installed with the most advanced sound systems available called Vitaphone.

The Warner officially opened on the 19^th of August, 1931. The opening ceremony presented the screening of the Walter Huston starrer movie, 'The Star Witness.' The event was attended by Governor Wilbur Cross, a number of Warner Brothers' representatives as well as some local dignitaries. Over the following two decades, the theatre screened several movies and established itself as the prime entertainment center in Torrington.

When the Great Flood tore through the city in 1955, the venue was badly damaged. The stage and orchestra pit and the intricately designed walls were destroyed by the flood water. Although the movie theatre opened shortly after the catastrophe, it remained in a rundown condition for years until a group of art lovers and historical advocates formed the Northwest Connecticut Association for the Arts, Inc. Through the fundraising campaign of this non-profit organization, the theatre was saved from demolition.

The Warner Stage Company is one of the most active community theatre programs in the region. It is a member of the American Association of Community Theatre (AACT). The program is run with the help of over eight hundred volunteers from across the state. Members of the community program ensure high quality production value and performances in order to make the theatrical experience unique and entertaining for the audience. The Warner Stage Company productions attract thousands of attendees and this number continues to grow with each new season.

The community program serves as an opportunity for talented stage artists and technicians to bring forth their talents on a larger scale. Throughout the season, the Stage Company members go through exhaustive rehearsal sessions as well as set and costume design preparations.

Following the Warner Stage production of 'Annie,' the venue again went through an extensive renovation process in 2001. It reopened the next year with a seating capacity of 1800. Today it presents over 170 shows annually. These range from Broadway productions to music concerts and many other performances of the like.  The Warner Theatre has been graced by various renowned performers, ranging from the Washington Ballet and Vienna Boys Choir to George Carlin and Anne Murray.
