Opened as a movie and vaudeville house on November 11, 1928, the Fisher Theater is noted for once featuring Mexican-Indian art, banana trees, a goldfish pond and wandering macaws that its patrons could feed.

Over the last four decades, the Fisher Theatre has been a favorite stopover for many of Broadway"s brightest stars such as Mary Martin, Carol Channing, Joel Grey, Bernadette Peters and Lynn Redgrave, and many others.

To-date, the Fisher Theater has played host to the world premieres of Hello Dolly, Fiddler on the Roof, Sweet Charity and Golden Boy. Residents call the Fisher Theater "A Part of the history of Detroit".

The Fisher Theater faced the prospects of closing its doors when hard times hit in the "50s. Scion of a wealthy cigar maker in Detroit, the Nederlander family D. T Nederlander became involved in the Fisher Theater.

Around this time Nederlander was also running the Detroit Opea House and a number of other popular Detroit theatres, booking vaudeville acts like Al Jolson, Bette Davis, and the Ziegfield Follies.

Under the management of the Nederlander Theatrical Corporation, the Fisher Theater underwent massive renovation. He redesigned the facility to accommodate live theatre, reduced the seating chart to make it more intimate setting.

The Fisher Theater was remodeled as live theater in 1961. Creating a new life for the failing Venue, Nederlander turned the facility into more intimate setting. The decor of the remodeled Fisher Theater was changed to a more simple mid-century design.

The original 3,500 seated theater was scaled down to 2,089 to ensure optimal sightlines and intimate atmosphere. The Fisher Theater is now decorated with marble, Indian rosewood and walnut paneling, and crystal and bronze decorative work.

After featuring live performances and eclectic events over four decades, the Fisher Theatre is now a part of the history of Detroit.

To-date, one of Detroit"s oldest live theater venues has entertained audiences by providing them ample opportunities to experience the energy of top acts and performances in the intimate settings.

As one of the City"s most happening venues, seats in the Fisher Theater are still favorites among citizens and out-of-towners alike. The Stage now primarily hosts travelling productions of Broadway shows.
