Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra performed The Rite of Spring and this event was conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. In the year 2008 Mass was also performed here, this is a creation of acclaimed composer Leonard Bernstein. Formerly called the Loew's 175th Street Theatre, the United Palace Theatre is a Broadway venue situated on 175th Street in Washington Heights, New York City known for church music and live music concerts. It was built as one of the five movie palaces known as Loew's Wonder Theatres. Its architect is Thomas W. Lamb.
 
 
The design is an eclectic mixture of various oriental styles like Rococo, Moorish, Persian and Deco. The theatre is decorated with Louis XV and XVI furnishings and numerous art works. The ceilings and walls are filigreed. The lightings behind and within walls are arranged at such strategic places that an aura of elegance and mystic surround the theatre. According to the A/A Guide to New York City, its design is based on "Cambodian Neo-Classical" style of architecture. It has a capacity of seating more than three thousand people. The seating arrangements themselves take your breath away. The seats are plush red. There are balcony box seats as well. The seating area is decorated with huge chandeliers hanging from the ceiling.
It was built in 1930. Like many movie palaces, its main purpose was to showcase movies and vaudeville. In the year 1969, most of the movie palaces were closed down. However, United Palace Theatre was saved from closing down by the Rev. Frederick J. Eikerenkoetter II, aka Reverend Ike. He paid half a million dollars for the building and set it up as offices for United Church Science of Living Institute.  Later, the area of the theatre was restored to be used for concerts.
 

Since 2007, the musical concerts conducted here are more varied. The rock concerts that are presented are not produced by the church but by another party led by Andy Feltz, who formerly worked for the Beacon Theatre. The recent performances at the United Palace Theatre include performances of Eddie Vedder, Vampire Weekend, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Sonic Youth, Beck, The Smashing Pumpkins, Jackson Browne, Sigur Rós, Alex Campos, Iggy and the Stooges, Björk, Allman Brothers Band, Arcade Fire, The Black Crowes and Modest Mouse. Other prestigious performances include Sir Simon Rattle's recital. He conducted the Berlin Philharmonic and played 'The Rite of Spring" of Stravinsky. Leonard Bernstein's "Mass" was performed at the venue to celebrate the ninetieth birthday of the great composer. Most of these shows were sold-out. The venue plans to hold more of such performances and become a vital fixture of the live music scene in New York.
