The History

The NFL’s Denver Broncos needed a new stadium and the wheels were put in motion by a team of thirteen lawyers, a lot of lobbying, and a few thousand dollars. The vote to approve the construction of a new football stadium in place of the Mile High Stadium took place in 1998.

The ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the stadium took place on August 17, 1999 and the stadium opened its doors for the public for the first time on August 11, 2001. The Denver Broncos, the tenants of the stadium stepped on to the field at their new home turf for the first time on September 10, 2001 in a game against the New York Giants. The home side marked the occasion by winning that encounter 31-20. Since then, the Empower Field at Mile High has played host to quite a few NFL playoff clashes over the years.

In 2005, the Broncos took on the Patriots in the AFC Divisional playoff game. The Broncos came out on top 27-13. The AFC Championship game for that season took place at the same venue a week later but this time the home side ended up on the wrong side of the result as they lost to the Steelers 34-17.

In January of 2014, the Broncos played another AFC Championship Game at the Empower Field at Mile High and beat the Patriots 26-16 to go all the way to the Super Bowl, their first since they began playing in this stadium. Then in 2016, they beat the Patriots once again in the AFC Championship Game and then clinched the Super Bowl two weeks later.

A Special History of Non-Sporting Events

The Empower Field at Mile High has a very special history when it comes to concerts. It goes back to August 11, 2001, the day the stadium opened. On that day, the legendary Eagles performed at the venue in front of 54,217 people. Since then, the stadium has provided the stage for some of the biggest names in music to perform for the fans.
