In 1930, this vaudeville venue changed its name to the Paramount Theater while it continued to show films until 1972. In 1971, the Paramount Theater was sold to John Haviland who intended to renovate the venue while offering a higher-class type of entertainment, including dinner theatre.

After undergoing major renovation, the building successfully managed to mark its place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

A major renovation restored the Paramount Theater to much of its original opulence and was named the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. The interior of the venue was painted one neutral color, rather than restoring the murals that had decorated it.

Besides featuring movies, the building began playing host to concerts in 1972. The beautifully restored Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall opened in 1984.

In addition to housing the Oregon Symphony, White Bird Dance Company, Portland Youth Philharmonic, Portland Arts & Lectures, the Arlene Schnitzer is also home to many more local performing arts groups.
