The construction of the Chaifetz Arena was a longstanding dream. The St. Louis Billikens, the athletic program of the St. Louis University wanted a new home for some of its team. The institution's management had been trying hard to make that happen. So, after a lot of planning and deliberations it was decided that a new multi-purpose facility was to be built on the campus.

The venue needed funding and twelve million dollars out of the estimated eighty one needed to construct the venue were provided by Richard A. Chaifetz. The business tycoon was a student at the St. Louis University and graduated from there in the year 1975. Chaifetz was broke and did not have the finances to cover his tuition fee during his academic years. Paul Reinert was the president at SLU during those days and he had a lot of faith in Chaifetz. Based on that belief he allowed young Chaifetz to stay at SLU and get his degree. Chaifetz made a promise that apart from returning the fee he owed the institution, he would also do something much more for SLU. He saw construction of the Chaifetz Arena as his big opportunity to fulfill the pledge he had made all those years ago.

There was still a lot of planning left to be done however. Mackey Mitchell Associates and Sink Combs Dethlefs were handed the task of designing the arena. Alper Audi were engineers that were to look after the structural part. Clayco Construction to oversee the entire project as general contractors.

Groundbreaking ceremony took place on 28^th August, 2006 and after more than a year and a half, the Chaifetz Arena opened its doors for the public for the first time on 10^th April, 2008. It has a capacity to host ten thousand six hundred people at a time which makes it the second largest Atlantic 10 Conference building. The entire building covers an area spanning over three hundred and twenty thousand square feet. On top of that, it also provides fourteen suites to go with two party rooms. Then there is a club at the venue as well that can play host to around one hundred and seventy five people at a time.

Since the Harlem Globetrotters faced Washington Generals in the first ever event held at the Chaifetz Arena on 11^th April, 2008, it has gone on to provide the stage to people from all walks of life.
