Prior to joining the SEC in 2012, Missouri was a charter member of what is now the Big 12 Conference, competing in that conference from starting in 1907 when it was known as the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association. He is known for the tail spinning, pushups and riding a 1950s vintage fire truck. The mascot makes hundreds of appearances state-wide at university functions, sporting events and at private parties. Truman the Tiger has also been honored with an award for "Best Mascot in the Nation" multiple times.

Soon the Missouri Tigers will be facing some of their rival teams such as the Arkansas Razorbacks, West Virginia Mountaineers, Kentucky Wildcats, Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs and the UCLA Bruins. The Missouri Tigers have defeated many of these teams in the past years. They are known for winning a number of national championships along with a huge list of Conference championships some of the recent winnings include the 2013 Mid-American Conference wrestling championship trophy, 2012 Big 12 Conference Basketball Tournament winning and the 2012 Baseball Tournament winning.

The Tigers are known for having a number of notable athletes who have helped raise the status of the team at various occasions. Some of them are Christian Cantwell, John Anderson, Phil Bradley, Linas Kleiza, John Kelly and Tyron Woodley. Some of the other players who served the Missouri Tigers for quite some time and are now a part of the athletics hall of fame list are Dan Devine, Johnny Roland, Jon Sunvold, Sabrina Dornhoefer and Natasha Kaiser.
