The Massey Hall is named after the famous Massey Family of Canada. The Massey's were a rich and business oriented family that owned the Massey manufacturing Co. When Charles Albert Massey, the son of Hart A. Massey passed away he started thinking bout doing something as a tribute to his son. Charles loved art so he started a magazine called Massey's Illustrated which promoted and published music, stories and poems. The Massey Hall opened its door for the first time to the public on 14^th June 1894. The first play to be held at the venue was Messiah by Handel.
 
The Massey Hall was called the Massey Music Hall when it was constructed. It was completely constructed of bricks at an estimated cost of one hundred and fifty thousand dollars. The hall had a seating capacity for four thousand people who could sit at different places like six private boxes, onstage seating in the form of tiers and two majestic balconies.
 
The Massey Music Hall as it was known by then underwent its first major renovations in 1933. Under the reconstructed design the seating capacity was reduced to two thousand and sixty five whereas the space in the lobby was made bigger. When it opened after renovations it was officially called the Massey Hall, the name it has kept ever since. The second phase of renovations started in 1948 when the wooden areas were replaced by concrete.
 
The Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall looks after both venues independently and runs the halls without any donation or help from the Government. Before the inauguration of the Roy Thomson Hall, the Massey Hall was the one and only major venue for performing arts in Toronto. It also helped increase the profile of the city as a major cultural and tourism hub.
 
The Massey Hall has a glorious past and by the looks of it a fantastic future as well.
