Home to the American Hockey League's St. John's IceCaps, the Centre was inaugurated in 2001 with the aim of replacing the Memorial Stadium in St. John. As the Memorial Stadium was shutdown, the city government decided to construct a state of the art facility in its place. Breaking ground in 1998, the venue was completed within the duration of three years, as its grand opening took place in 2001. Designed by the PBK Architects, Inc. the Mile One Centre cost a whopping twenty five million dollars to construct. The indoor arena was designed in such a way that it would cater to hockey tournaments, standup comedy shows, basketball matches, festivals, public ice skating, family events and live concerts. Providing a seating capacity of up to 7000 attendees, the venue is known to cater audiences of all ages.
At the time of the facility's construction a generic name was chosen due to the building's location. Over the years though the naming rights of the centre have been sold to several companies, charitable organizations and interested families, the name of the venue has been kept intact due to its popularity. The first sale of the naming rights was made to the Molson Brewing Company that purchased the Centre for ten years until 2011. After 2011 the Mile One Centre was purchased by Cable Atlantic owner, Danny Williams for $600,000. However, within a year's time, Williams decided to resell the arena to the Rogers Communication Company. Even though the centre's ownerships changed after every few years, the name of the arena is owned by the Danny Williams family's organization, who wishes to establish a trademark name of the facility throughout the world.
Over the years, some of the events that have taken place at the Mile One Centre include performances and acts by Leonard Cohen, The Tenors, Jeff Dunham, Black Label Society, Russell Peters and John Fogerty. The Mile One Centre has also known to hold two Juno Award ceremonies in 2002 and 2009, making it the first entertainment facility to hold an on the road Juno Award show outside British Columbia. Make your way to the centre this year, as it hosts some of the greatest concerts in Canada. Buy Mile One Centre tickets today.
