Moran Theater opened on February 8, 1997 and was named for Jan and Jim Moran, in appreciation for their $2 million donation. The facility opened its doors for the public with a performance by violinists Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman.

Also called the Jim & Jan Moran Theater, it is designed for amplified performances including broadway shows, non-accoustical concerts and ballets.

It can accommodate as many as 3,000 people and welcomes a host of music and theater artists every month. Moran Theater is also noted for being one of the few places in the country where trained guide dogs are allowed into the arena.

The owners of Moran Theater, Jim and Jan Moran of Boca Raton have been major players in the economy of Jacksonville for decades. They started their business from scratch and took it to the heights of success. Moran began his career pumping gas and first went into business for himself in 1943.

He then bought a Chicago gas station and then strengthened and expanded his business. The Moran firm, J-M Family Enterprises is now a huge force in the Toyota automobile business, importing, processing and distributing thousands of the cars and trucks through the region"s port. The family also contributed $2 million toward the capital campaign for the Times-Union Center.

The opening night of Moran Theater featured a grand opening concert of Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman who performed with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. The Moran Family was present at the event and enjoyed the performances.

To-date, the Moran Theater has put up on stage a spectacular array of internationally acclaimed events while featuring top artists. Some of them included classics such as The Phantom of the opera and Miss Saigon.

Those who have not been to the facility recently may miss out on the events the Moran Theater is bringing for them this season. Watch out for The King and I, Beethoven"s Fifth and a lot.
