About Mannheim Steamroller
Neoclassical new-age music ensemble Mannheim Steamroller was formed in the mid-1970s. Popular musician and author Chip Davis laid the foundations of the group in Omaha. The group's major claim to fame is the Fresh Aire albums series whose inaugural version was released in 1975.
These records are primarily known for the fusion of classical music with elements of rock and new age. The unveiling of Fresh Aire in 1975 was also Mannheim Steamroller's mainstream debut. It received a very good critical and commercial response, eventually earning a Gold certification from the RIAA.
The next album Fresh Aire II was released in 1977. Like its predecessor, it was also certified Gold by the RIAA. Other prominent records in the Fresh Aire series included Fresh Aire V (1983), Fresh Aire VI (1986), Fresh Aire 7 (1990), and Fresh Aire 8 (2000).
Fresh Aire VI was Mannheim Steamroller's first entry on the Billboard 200. This was followed by Fresh Aire 7 which peaked at number 2 on the New Age Albums chart. It also earned the group their maiden Grammy Award in 1992 for "Best New Age Album."
Setting Up of American Gramaphone
In 1974, after no major record label was interested in handling the distribution of Chip Davis's music, he set up one of his own. As a result, American Gramaphone came into being. The company's first release was Mannheim Steamroller's 1975 debut Fresh Aire. Over the years and decades, American Gramaphone has gone on to become one of the biggest independent labels in the industry.
Drift Towards Christmas Music

Building on the success of its predecessor, the record topped the Holiday Albums chart and reached number 4 on the New Age Albums rankings.
Other prominent Christmas albums include Christmas in the Aire (1995), Christmas Live (1997), Christmas Extraordinaire (2001), and Christmas Symphony (2011).To date, Mannheim Steamroller has sold over 40 million albums. Of these, about 29 million are Christmas records.
