In order to select the best architectural design for the Academy, a competition was carried out between several companies/architects in the year 1954. The contest was won by a Philadelphia firm owned by Napoleon Le Brun and Gustavus. The architects laid more focus on the interior aspect of the building while leaving the exterior relatively plain in marble. Donated by the Philadelphia Gas Works, Bronze gas lanterns were installed within the premises of the center in 1968. The practical implementation of the project was a rather huge challenge for the architects. The aspects of optical and acoustic effects were taken special care of providing utmost comfort to the audience. The overall seating arrangement in designed in an 'open horseshoe' shape which enables greater visibility of the stage to the viewers particularly those sitting in the balconies. The hall is enclosed by a strong brick wall lined with pine boards so as to absorb and prevent echoing sounds.

One of the highlight features of the auditorium is its regal grand crystal chandelier weighing nearly five thousand pounds. The glided and carved sculptural designs of Charles Busher and Adolph bailey are displayed at various corners across the hall. These huge and intricate exhibits are a magnificent treat to the eyes. The wall paintings by Karl Schmolze are another sight that leaves the attendees awestruck.

The grand opening ceremony of the Academy of Music took place in the year 1857. It was attended by renowned personalities of the time including President Franklin Pierce. The first opera to be presented on the Academy stage was Verdi's 'II Trovatore'. Being the largest opera house of the country, the Academy of Music has showcased many premieres of renowned opera productions. These include Gounad's 'Faust', Wagner's 'The Flying Dutchman' and Stauss' 'Ariadne auf Naxox' to name a few.
