The Dean E. Smith Center which is a student activity center is commonly known as the Smith Center or the Dean Dome. This student activity center is located in Chapel Hill in North Carolina. It is a multipurpose arena which is a home to Chapel Hill Tar heels men's basketball team at the University of Carolina. The arena is also a short-term home to the women's basketball team at the University of Carolina as their home is being renovated to the Carmichael Auditorium. The Smith arena was inaugurated in the year of 1986.
The Dean E. Smith Center has been named after the previous head coach of North Carolina by the name of Dean Smith. Dean Smith coached the team in North Carolina from the year of 1961 till 1997. David Halberstam who wrote the biography of Michael Jordan, claims that Dean Smith was not in the approval of having an arena named after him, but he was convinced and finally won over by the administration of the UNC (University of North Carolina) and also by the people who funded in the making of this incredible arena. They did so, by telling Dean Smith that the arena's facility will not gain popularity if his name was not used. Dean Smith successfully coached for a total of eleven years at the arena, and this made him one of the very few college coaches to have coached in an arena or center that had been named for him.
The total seating capacity at the Dean E. Smith Center is 21,444. Some adjustments to the seating arrangements were made in 1992 and brought the capacity up to 21,572. Then in 2000, further seating adjustments were made and the seating capacity rose to 21,570. On the 6th of March in 2005, the arena saw one of the largest crowds to come and watch a game live at this spectacular arena. There were more than 22,125 people in the arena to watch the Tar Heels win by a score of 75-73 against the team known as Duke.
