The York Fairgrounds
It would not be wrong to say that the tradition of fairs in the modern world is set up by America"s first Fair, the York Fair, which was held in the historic city of York in 1765.
In the initial years, the Fair was the two-day agricultural market. In 1853, the Fair was made to be held for three days and expanded to seven acres of land in 1856 giving it a new location and that new location is where there is Queen and King Street in the present.
In 1862, the Fair started being used for war injured soldiers and the Fair could not be held till 1865 because of the accommodation of the wounded. Presently, York fairgrounds plan to build a Vietnam veterans War Memorial, to honor the killed soldiers in the war and is expected to be completed by the end of 2009.
In 1888, the Fair was expanded to seventy three acres of land and became the York Expo Fair Property. The Fair continued to be held even after the eruption of World War 1 but was not held in the year 1918 because of the outbreak of influenza in the city.
As years passed, the Fair changed in many ways increasing the number of people attending it and entertainments like horse races, dances and activities like strong man competitions were added to the Fair with the developing tastes of the people.
In 1926, the Fair was extended to five days and in 1930"s, automobile racing was added on the track which became very popular in a short time.
In 1950"s, Memorial Hall was constructed by the Fair which was used for other non-fair activities when the season of Fair was out back in those days.
In 1975, the Fair was extended to nine days. Like the Memorial Hall, the Horticulture Hall, Old Main and the Banquet Centre was renovated and used for rent out all year round. The Fair remained open even after the terrorist attack on Twin Towers and Pentagon as a showcase of American rich culture.
More than 160 fairs are booked at the building throughout the year. In 2003, York County Agricultural Society built a new Toyota Arena providing a rentable area for exhibitions and fairs.
The Toyota Arena held grand Ole Opry, conventions, car shows, trade shows, graduations and a political rally for President George W. Bush.
A motorcycle event is held at the York Fairgrounds with a focus on Harley-Davidson enthusiastic people with a free demonstration ride to make the experience complete. The Vagfair 2009 will also be held at the York Fairgrounds.
