Built in 1967, the forum is part of a building that consists of two other entertainment venues namely the Ahmanson Theatre and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The forum with its complete grandeur sits in the middle and is often compared to East Coast's Lincoln Theatre. Owned by the Center Theatre Group, all three theatres were designed by Welton Becket, a Los Angeles architect. Becket made sure to incorporate concept of New Formalism while drawing the blueprints for all the three venues. Considered to be one of the architect's best works, the Mark Taper Forum boasts of a distinct design. Even though Becket wasn't aware of the purpose his buildings would serve, his geometrical designs seem to compliment the venue's usage in the later years.
Being named after a real estate investor of Los Angeles, the three buildings were chosen by cultural leader, Dorothy Chandler and artistic director of the Cultural Theatre Group, Gordon Davidson to serve as entertainment centers. With a tenure that rounded to a figure of 38 years, Davidson was able to convince the founders of the Cultural Theatre Group to purchase the Mark Taper Forum. Ever since then, the facility has grown to be known for its semicircular amphitheatre, thrust stage and the intimacy the rooms provide between the audiences and performers.
In July of 2007 the venue underwent renovations, funded by the Rios Clementi Hale Studios. Providing funds of a whopping thirty million dollars, the forum remained closed after the 2006/2007 season and was reopened in 2008. The debut show that took place at the newly renovated facility was The House of Blue Leaves by John Guare. Without changing the venue's shape or design, the size of the lobby was expanded, and the interiors were changed as well. Decreasing the seating capacity from 745 to 739, the venue reopened with full force, presenting presentations such as 13, Angels in America, Flower Drum Song, Twilight: Los Angeles, Radio Golf and the Shadow Box.
Over the years, the Mark Taper Forum has become a major part of the entertainment scene in Los Angeles. Its ambience not only makes every show a delight to witness, the state of the art lighting techniques, powerful sound systems and circular stage intensifies the glory and excitement.
