The popular Lisner Auditorium is situated in the George Washington University. This auditorium also houses the Gallery of art. When the auditorium was built it was the biggest in the whole town.

The auditorium is situated in the campus of the George Washington University. The cornerstone was laid in 1941 and the construction of the auditorium was completed in 1943.

History
The auditorium was named after the donor, Abram Lisner, who was a philanthropist, a University Trustee and a merchant by profession. He donated money in his will for the construction of the Lisner Auditorium.

Design
The architecture of the auditorium is unique and was designed by the company of Faulkner and Kingsbury. Charles H. Tompkins Company built the auditorium. Initially the auditorium was built for the university purposes. However, later it was opened for commercial use in the year 1946.

The auditorium has a capacity of 1,550 seats. The auditorium boasts a stage which is stretched over 59 feet and it is indeed the largest stage in the big New York City.

Modern lighting and sound system makes the performances on stage appear beautiful and mystifying. This auditorium was used for varied musical and theatrical performances till the time Kennedy Center was opened. Mrs. Susan Whitney Dimock donated money for the Dimock Gallery built next to the Lisner Lounge.
