The Arkansas State University is counted among the leading universities in the southern region of the United States. The university has the second largest student base in the Arkansas state, with more than thirteen thousand five hundred students enrolled. The Convocation Center was constructed in a span of three years with a cost amounting to roughly nineteen million dollars. It hosted its first event in 1987, which was a concert by the country music singer George Straight. It immediately came into use for hosting the collegiate events of the 1987-88 season. The first game that it hosted was a women's basketball match between the ASU Red Wolves and the Indiana State, which the ASU won by seven points.

The Convo, as it is popularly called, is also home to the women's indoor track and field teams. It hosts many ASU's athletic contests and also houses the athletic offices. The spacious arena can hold up to ten thousand five hundred spectators for basketball matches. For concerts the capacity increases to eleven thousand seven hundred. The highest turnout at the Convocation Center was for a women's basketball game, between the ASU and Arkansas. Almost ten thousand nine hundred people showed up to watch the historic match, which the ASU won.

Over the years, many noticeable artists have graced the stage at the Convo, giving memorable performances. Superstars of the eighties like Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire have performed there. More recently, artists like Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban and Rascal Flatts have gained considerable appreciation from the audience for their entertaining shows at the Convo.

The Arkansas State University Convocation Center underwent quite a few changes in 2012. The most prominent change was the replacement of the original scoreboard, which was set up in 1987. A new high definition video board, measuring twenty five by twelve feet was installed in its place. In addition to the new video board, the sound speaker was updated as well. The roof of the arena, which was causing some problems, was scrapped and a new roof was installed as part of the renovations.
