Ohio Theatre Columbus was a historic movie palace in 1928 and was declared as Official Theatre of the State of Ohio. Later in 1969, it was saved from demolition and restored for the generations to see and experience the events within its premises. In 1977, the theatre was declared as the National Historic Landmark which was a matter of immense pride for the residents of Columbus, Ohio.

The Columbus Association of the Performing Arts currently owns and operates The Ohio Theatre Columbus which is a non-profit arts management organization. The organization took the responsibility of restoring and preserving the theatre in 1969 and since then it took care of the arena. Located in Downtown Columbus, the Ohio Theatre Columbus was designed by Thomas W Lamb. Although he designed many other theatres but the one that gained a lot of fame was Ohio Theatre Columbus.

The architect has managed to design the theater very masterfully and gave it an ambiance that is unmatched. It has been designed in a manner that you are able to get comfortable as soon as you enter the luxurious venue. New York famous decorator Anne Dornan furnished the theatre and claimed the Africa Corner as the most beloved one since all the collectables placed there are authentic collection from her travels.

Earlier the theatre also had its own orchestra and in addition to showing movies, deluxe variety shows were also played at the arena. Some of the classic MGM movies were showcased at Ohio Theatre Columbus and thus it was declared as the premiere place for MGM films.  Most of the programs ran for a week while there was also an exception in the case of Gone With The Wind which continued for three weeks. During the second World War the theatres were busier than ever and Ohio Theatre Columbus was not an exception. Ohio Theatre Columbus tickets sold like hot cakes and this added to its fame too.

In 1940’s when the TV became popular, the attendance to the theatre automatically reduced. People started spending time at homes and thus the movie watching ritual especially on the weekends was somehow affected. Further reduction was seen when people started moving from the city areas to the suburbs. The need for theatre was felt as the lives became busier and mechanical. To break the cycle of boredom, people started coming to Ohio Theatre once again and soon it gained recognition as a place worth a visit. The renovation of the arena added to the beauty of the place with the original stage and interior artistically renovated and saved. If you want to enjoy an event here then gather your family or friends and get Ohio Theatre Columbus tickets in hand this season!

The Ohio Theatre is one of downtown's oldest theatres. Home to The Columbus Symphony Orchestra, BalletMet, and The Broadway Series, as well as more than 100 CAPA events each year, including music from all genres and corners of the world, dance, theater, comedy, children's entertainment, and the time-honored Summer Movie Series, it is known as the Official Theatre of the State of Ohio, and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977.

A historic restored movie palace which serves as the leading performing arts center in Columbus, Ohio, is the Ohio Theatre. Located in downtown Columbus on the site of the old Columbus City Hall, the Ohio Theatre is the states busiest performing arts facility.

It hosts more than 100 CAPA shows a year, touring artists, and a variety of performances by the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, BalletMet, and Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Columbus.

Designed by the Scottish-born architect, Thomas W. Lamb, Ohio Theatre opened in 1928 as a Loew's movie house that was a 2,779-seat Spanish-Baroque masterpiece that had its own orchestra and theatre organ. Live stage shows touring on the Loews circuit also found a home on the Ohio stage.

Many top performers graced Ohio's stage, including Milton Berle, Ray Bolger, Cab Calloway, Buddy Ebsen, Martha Raye, Jean Harlow, Ginger Rogers, Kate Smith, and a young M.C. with a violin named Jack Benny during the heyday of vaudeville.

The decoration and furnishing of the theatre was done by Anne Dornan, who was one of the first women to graduate from the Columbia School of Architecture. Dornan traveled around the world to select art and furnishings and approximately $1,000,000 was spent on art and furnishing, which was probably more than the cost of the building itself!

The theatre that once thrived as movie house, however, like many other grand theatres of the past, the Ohio Theatre also headed for demolition. In 1969, the citizens of central Ohio mounted a Save the Ohio campaign, raising over 2 million dollars in less than a year in an unprecedented effort.

The newly formed Columbus Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA) subsequently purchased and renovated the Ohio Theatre, creating a home for Columbus' performing arts institutions that is the busiest performing arts facility in Ohio.

Today, the Ohio Theatre's lush interior, 21 foot high chandelier, excellent acoustics, and state-of-the-art stage facilities have made it a favorite of leading CAPA-sponsored performers including Carole King, Julie Andrews, Yo-Yo Ma, Yanni, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Kenny G.
