Situated in New Haven, Connecticut, the center was founded in 1914 by the Shubert Brothers, two years following the launch of the chain of theatres' first setting in New York City. The construction was designed by architect Albert Swazey while implemented by the H.E Murdock Company. It was during this time that the house came to be known as the 'Birthplace of the Nation's Greatest Hits'.  The theatre was shut down in 1976 for a period of seven years. However, it reopened in 1983 as an even better and intricately designed piece of art. The restoration process was undertaken by architect Robert Wendler and the Fusco Corporation. Special attention to detail was given to the historical and cultural aspects of the interior. The use of gold leaf, ivory and ecru was incorporated while renovating the auditorium.
From a Broadway try out house to a nonprofit center of performing arts, the Shubert theatre has evolved as a hospitable and welcoming center of performing arts for all. Over the last century, it has introduced and staged many performances by renowned productions and artists. Some of the recent top talents to have performed at the center include names like Robert Redford, James Garner, Katherine Dunham and John Travolta.
