The track was made bigger and better and its capacity grew from around 100,000 to over 125,000 during 25 years. After undergoing several phases of improvements in garage and infield areas, Michigan International Speedway became one of the United States top facilities for both stock-car and Indy-car racing.

In July 1999, Roger Penske merged his motorsports venture with International Speedway Corporation. 11,000 seats were added in 2000, while the largest renovation project in Michigan International Speedway"s history was completed before the 2005 racing season.

Michigan International Speedway currently plays host to two NASCAR races called the 3M Performance 400 Presented by Bondo in the Sprint Cup Series, and the Carfax 250 in the Nationwide Series.

The wide surface allows drivers to choose the most effective line for them to compete for NASCAR glory, making the Michigan International Speedway a favorite track among drivers.

Cale Yarborough was the one who made first victory in Michigan International Speedway"s inaugural NASCAR event. He later won seven more races on the track. With nine career Michigan victories, David Pearson is the all-time leader.

Michigan International Speedway will always have a special place in Dale Jarrett"s heart for scoring his first career Cup series victory. With the latest round of improvements done, Michigan International Speedway can now accommodate up to 137,000 people. Those wanting to enjoy camping at the track have acres and acres available to them in areas near the track"s property.

Both the 3M Performance 400 Presented by Bondo in the Sprint Cup Series, and the Carfax 250 in the Nationwide Series are likely to involve a fair number of cars crashing into each other.

Therefore, the track has been selected by the Michigan Department of Transportation as a neutral testing facility for car-to-car and car-to-road technology.
