The people of Harrisburg felt the need of a cultural center, and started idealizing the building of a multi purpose arena and also started working on the project.

So with the help of generous funding from the people and ideas of the leaders, the Whitaker Center was opened for public in 1997 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

It took approximately fifty two million dollars to build this venue. The venue is named after Uncas A. Whitaker and his wife Helen F. Whitaker because of their huge funding of eight million dollars in the construction of the building.

Whitaker Center is one f the most famous centers for collaborating arts and science under one roof and is situated over vast area of 1, 30,000 square feet. The building is a state of the art venue with a two level connecting lobby and a two storey curved wall.

The chairman of the board is Harold A. Mclnnes, who is in the charge for six years, and it is because of his able leadership that the Center is able to gather approximately fifty two million dollars as funds in a year. The Whitaker Center is a multi purpose arena which offers science house to performing arts and cinema, all in one place.

The president and CEO of the Center is Michael L. Hanes and Natalie Sandel is the Chief Financial Officer of the Whitaker Center. Penny Brady is the Vice President of sales, Steve Bishop is the Vice President of the Science Center, Lisa Kreider is the Vice President of Operations, Stephen F. Krempasky is the Vice President of Theater Operations, Susan L. Stuart is the Vice President of Development and Kathleen Keller is the Vice President of Marketing.

Whitaker Center displays shows and events all year round but will remain close on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year"s Day this year. There is a sufficient area for parking near the venue, on Walnut Street Garage of on the street.

The charges of parking depend on the kind of event being held there. Whitaker Center is easy to find and has several routes by which the venue can be reached. Whitaker Center can be reached from the Harrisburg, from York, Baltimore and Washington D.C, form Lancaster and from Eastern or Western Pennsylvania.

The venue is equipped with elevators, separate diaper changing rooms, rest rooms for guests, emergency services and first aid and services for disabled persons. Food and beverages facility is available on the venue and outside food is not allowed in the arena.

Smoking is prohibited in the Whitaker Center to keep the environment clean and healthy. Whitaker Center has four components. Those are, Whitaker Center for Science and Arts, Select Medical IMAX Theater, Harsco Science Center and Sunoco Performance Theater.

Whitaker Center for Science and Arts and Harsco Science Center is the venue for science exhibitions and projects. Select Medical IMAX Theater is the venue for displaying blockbuster movies on the cinema film and Sunoco Performance Theater is the performing arts venue of the Center.
