The Canterbury Park was founded in 1985 by Walter Brooks Fields, Jr. At first the venue was better known for hosting major horse racing events which it still continues to do. With time, the spectrum of entertainment has expanded immensely. In the late 80s, the addition of casino gaming increased the popularity of the venue, known as Canterbury Downs at that time. In 1995, the park was sold to Randy and Curtis Sampson and the name was officially changed to Canterbury Park.

A few years ago a large sum of money was spent on inaugurating the Mystic Lake Casino and the Mystic Lake Derby. A variety of food stalls have also been sited throughout the vicinity of the Canterbury Park. Some of the popular ones are Canterbury Cantina, Club House Buffet, Pronto Pups, Mini Donuts Stand and Finish Line Café. The entire venue is divided into three levels, the track level, the mezz level and the clubhouse level.  At first it was just punk rock but in the past years the event has been showcasing several other genres including hip hop, alternative rock, metalcore, reggae, pop, ska and hardcore punk. To date, the Vans Warped Tour has been to Canada, England, Australia, Japan, America and several European countries around the world. The tour also includes many other attractions including a half pipe for skaters and bikers and personal booths for each band to sell their merchandise and sign autographs.

As of 2000, the event has featured almost 100 bands per show. Many mainstream bands such as My Chemical Romance, Rise Against, D12, Fall Out Boy, Matchbook Romance and Avenged Sevenfold have performed at the Warped Tour.
