The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall opened its door for the general public for the first time in the year 1970 with a Fiddler on the Roof performance. That was the commencement on a journey that has gone on to turn this arena into one of the premier theaters in the country today.

It has a unique design that was put forward by The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. It is based on two seashells that were extracted from the Sea of Japan. The purple color for the outer walls of the building was selected by none other than Olgivanna Lloyd Wright, the wife of Frank Lloyd. The design makes it the only purple colored, seashell shaped structure in the world.

The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall underwent its first major renovation three decades after its completion. It was a tough task that called for meticulous planning as the original design and the overall look had to remain the same.
