Situated in the historic and gorgeous Gramercy neighborhood, the theatre was constructed in 1937. The building was designed by the famous architect of the time Charles A. Sandblom with a Streamline or Art Moderne architectural style that emerged after the great depression of 1930's. The theatre was named as Gramercy Park Theatre after it was built but was later reduced to Gramercy Theatre only.

What started as a movie theatre showcasing third, first and sub-run mainstream movies; gradually evolved into a venue hosting live events and concerts. The idea of showcasing such movies was conceived by the company and theatre owner of that time 'Cinema V' which remained in charge of the theatre till 1992. The theatre was used to feature movies exclusively made in India, after a real estate investor Amit Govil became the person in-charge. It was until 1998 that the concept of the theatre was revived and the building was revamped to the requirements of the live theatre.

In the following year, the Roundabout Theatre Company showcased many off-Broadway productions along with various other plays by the modern play writers including Beth Henley, Harold Pinter and Brian Friel. With such innovation, Gramwercy Theatre became the largest venue for showcasing such shows of that time. These productions carried on till 2004, when theatre was shut down for a short period of time.

The theatre re-opened in the year of 2006 when the group Live Nation purchased the space and intended to turn the theatre into an ideal venue for live concerts and musical performances. A houseful crowd saw the very first production 'Stellastarr' under the label of Live Nation. The theater was re-named as Blender Theater at Gramercy after 2007, when the Blender Magazine became a big commercial sponsor for the theatre shows. But soon after two years the original and historical name of the Gramercy Theatre was restored.

Today, the theatre organizes a variety of live musical shows featuring popular artists of the time like Matty B, Dawn Richards, The Wildhearts, Robert Glasper, Counting Crows, The Jonas Brothers and others.
