Lowe Motor Speedway is one of the country's busiest sports venues. The major races held here are 3 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series events, 2 Busch Series races as well as one Craftsman Truck Series race. The foundations of the Speedway were laid in 1959 by two men namely, Bruton Smith (Race promoter/car dealer) and Curtis Turner (driver). At the time it was a small dirt track but over the years, it has been developed into a state of the art speed way. Today owned by Speedway Motorsports, it is 1.5-mile long oval race track with a seating capacity of around 167,000. The infield can have room for fifty thousand more spectators. The track also has luxury suites which offer an unobstructed view of the tracks. The year round condominiums overlooking the track were added in 1984 which made the Speedway the first American sports facility to offer this. 8 years later, a revolutionary reflective lighting system was installed with the cost of $1.7 million making the venue, first modern speedway to feature night racing. There are no interfering light poles, shadows or glares as mirrors are used in the process to stimulate the daylight. In 2006, the speed way was repaved after that a new drag strip called zMax Dragway, was constructed near it the nest year. All NHRA category events are hosted on this strip along with many others.

Other amenities of the Lowes Motor Speedway include the Speedway Club which is a top quality restaurant. It is so popular that even when there are no racing events, patrons can be seen visiting it throughout the year. Visiters can also find a large collection of car racing brands memorabilia at the Gift Shop in Smith Tower. Concession stands are located everywhere with a variety of food items, snacks and drinks. Pizza and bbq are also sold by independent vendors. Fans can get souvenirs at the souvenir stands which are located all around the Speedway.

Adding to that, the speedway is also used as a testing and research base by many race teams as well as automobile manufacturers. The Lowes Motor Speedway is often rented by big corporations such as Coca-Cola, Lowe's Home Improvement, Miller Brewing, DuPont etc. for the filming of their television commercials. Sometimes these companies also hire it for the music food and rides for the entertainment of their employees and clients. Driving schools and other dirt track events, auto shows, you name it!
