This 88-year old stadium is planning to remodel itself pretty soon due to which the University of Washington has reached a tentative agreement to play its home football games at the Seahawks' Qwest Field in 2010.
The outdoor athletic stadium, known as the Husky Stadium, on the campus of the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, hosts the football and track and field competitions of Washington Huskies of the Pacific Ten Conference and is also home to it.
The stadium is located between Montlake Boulevard N.E. and Union Bay, just north of the Montlake Cut. It opened on November 27, 1920 and got a facelift done in 1987. It was specifically designed in a U-Shape to minimize glare from the early afternoon sun in the athletes" eyes. It was built at a cost of $600,000.
The new stadium replaced Denny Field, which was located on the upper campus, south of the intersection of NE 45th St. and 20th Ave. NE. the stadium so far has gone through four remodels to increase its seating capacity.
Originally, when the stadium was built, it had a seating capacity of 30,000, which is now increased to 72,500, due to which the stadium has been ranked as the nation's 15th largest on-campus facility. And as the grass playing field was ripped up and replaced by Astroturf, the Huskies became the first collegiate team to ever have an Astroturf field.
It is the largest stadium, college or professional, in the Pacific Northwest. In 2000, when the Seahawks moved into Husky Stadium, the Astroturf was replaced by Field Turf.
Today, Husky Stadium is one of the best collegiate stadiums in football. The lower seating bowl at Husky Stadium is shaped like a horseshoe. A covered upper deck is located on both sides of the stadium.
Seventy percent of the seats are located between the end zones. Fans attending football games at Husky Stadium receive excellent views of downtown Seattle, Mt. Rainier, the Olympic Mountain Range and Union Bay at Lake Washington. One other unusual feature of this fantastic stadium is that fans can go to the football games by boat as boat moorings are available for fans to travel to Washington games via the water.
Husky Stadium has been a primary venue for the 1990 Goodwill Games, which was addressed by President Ronald Reagan and the famous actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Moody Blues gave a performance then.
The stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the track & field competition. Husky Stadium was the temporary home of the Seattle Hawks for five games in 1994.
After the demolition of the Kingdome in March 2000, the Seahawks played at Husky Stadium for two seasons, 2000 and 2001, then moved into Qwest Field for the 2002 season.
The Husky Stadium is going to be renovated soon. The university is looking to begin on the project at the immediate conclusion of the 2009 season.
The renovation would take approximately 20 months to complete. In case the stadium is not ready by the 2010 season, then Seahawks will use of Qwest Field.
