Situated in downtown Buffalo, New York, USA, HSBC Arena inaugurated in September 1996. The venue replaced the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium and was known as Crossroads Arena while it was being built. Marine Midland Bank had the naming rights and the building was called Marine Midland Arena prior to the first game being scheduled. After the rebranding measures by HSBC in 1999, the arena was renamed HSBC Arena. Exactly at the same time, the first college basketball tournament game in the arena was played. Secondly, the name of press box in the arena is owed to a Former Sabres broadcaster and Hockey Hall of Fame member Ted Darling.
The scoreboard of HSBC Arena was damaged in 2007-2008 season but it was rectified and placed again. Two lighted Sabres logos were added the same year in the higher portion of the pavilion across the Sports Headlines bar. Also, a mural was affixed in the lower pavilion near the main entrance. Pictures from the 2008 NHL Winter Classic can be seen in the mural. The Ice Hockey team Buffalo Sabres of the ', the other teams that have been playing here are the Buffalo Blizzard of the National Professional Soccer League II, the Buffalo Destroyers of the Arena Football League and the Buffalo Wings of Roller Hockey International during each team's brief existence.
Apart from these activities, concerts and basketball games are also regularly conducted here. The Frozen Four NCAA Ice Hockey tournament was hosted here in 2003 while the men's basketball tournaments like MAAC (1997, 1999, 2001, 2005) and NCAA (2000, 2004, 2007) have been conducted here as well. In 1999, the World Wrestling Entertainment's Fully Loaded event was held here. Other wrestling events that have been conducted at HSBC Arena are Armageddon (2008), World Championship Wrestling's Fall Brawl 2000 and the Great American Bash (2005).
The variety of events hosted at HSBC Arena is really overwhelming. It hosted the 2008 NHL Winter Classic, conducted as a house party. The Buffalo Sabres Alumni Hockey Team played here as part of the celebrations. A Winter Classic event also followed next. The IIHF World Junior Championship tournament will be hosted here in 2010-2011.
A total of 18,690 spectators can be seated here for the sporting events. If a concert, basketball game or some other event is hosted here, then the total number of seats is increased.
