Pop Rock is the most popular and widely accepted genre of music that has its following in every region of the world. The sound of pop rock emerged in the 1960's in Great Britain and United States. Due to its' melodic structure and not-so-soft-not-so-hard kind of base, this genre quickly gained widespread acceptance and appreciation. The generality in its sound became the USP of pop rock and it overshadowed the folk, country and all other genres; with the exception of rock 'n' roll. Now after decades of innovation and improvement, the sound still rules the rest in terms of popularity and business.
The new-age sound of pop rock absorbs elements of various genres and styles. It is basically a free-style music form that incorporates various styles and creates a unique yet a common sound. Most of today's Pop Rock music is highlighted by catchy tunes, light lyrics, guitar-based tones, smooth texture and above all, sophisticated use of technology. Talking about commercialization, pop rock is the largest selling music genre of today. Artists and albums from this field sell like hot cakes and always rule the charts. Taking a cue from the rise of Beatlemania, these artists created such great public persona that can put even some Hollywood stars to shame. These singers became the premier example of fan and media fancy while other pop rock acts such as Daryl Hall, Stevie Wonder, John Oates, Stevie Nicks, Roxette, Phil Collins, Billy Ocean and Michael Bolton also fared well on the charts.
While most of the pop rock artists of the 80's continued their fame well into the 90's as well, while many new bands and singers also rose on the horizon. The pop rock of these times was complemented with more studio effects and computer generated sounds. Mariah Carey, Alanis Morissette, No Doubt, Robbie Williams, Celine Dion, Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls and Boyzone became the torch bearers of pop rock scene of those times.
Experimentation also continued in all these years and singers like Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears brought a new dimension to the genre, known as dance pop. Further subdivisions were witnessed as the emergence of pop punk and Latin pop; where the later gave us stars like Shakira, Ricky Martin and Enrique Iglesias.
The magic of pop rock continues in 2000's as well. Many new artists swept the audiences off their feet while the established ones also maintained their fan base. Today, we see the likes of Pink, Justin Timberlake, All Time Low, Kylie Minogue, Pussycat Dolls, Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson, Lindsay Lohan, Rihanna, Avril Lavigne and McFly supporting pop rock music and adding more substance to it. The latest music sensations, Miley Cyrus and Jonas Brothers, are also churning out gold with their pop rock sound.
