American progressive band, 'Coheed and Cambria,' is as renowned for its distinctive music, as for its thematic lyrics. Although the band was originally formed as a rock group, over the years, it has diversified to include elements of progressive rock and metal in its music.
The band's albums are all high-concept records, which tell a science fiction storyline, called 'The Amory Wars'. The story has been authored by the band's front man, Claudio Sanchez, and has been written out in a series of comic books.
Coheed and Cambria's live shows not only keep the audiences engrossed throughout the band's performance, but also transports them into the band's fantastical world. This alternate reality has seventy-eight planets, which are held in place by interconnecting beams of energy, known as Keywork.

The band was formed in 1995 and underwent several lineup changes in its initial years. The ensemble spent quite some time experimenting with different musical styles, including funk, indie rock, punk rock, acoustic rock and heavy metal before settling on classic hard rock.
The group wrote dozens of songs and released their debut album, “Plan to Take Over the World”, in 1999. Another EP, “The Penelope,” was also released by the group in the same year. The following year, they released “Delirium Trigger,” which was their first album to include songs describing a science fiction story. This story was first called 'The Bag on the Line Adventures', but was later renamed as 'The Amory Wars'. In 1998, the band members finally decided to call themselves Coheed and Cambria, which are the names of two protagonists in the story.
In 2002, the ensemble released their first studio album, “The Second Stage Turbine Blade”. The band also released their first single and music video, Devil in the Jersey City. Following this, the group toured the United States and Japan and also became part of the Vans Warped Tour. By now the band's fan base had increased significantly.
In 2003, the band released its second studio album, “In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3”. The album reached number fifty-two on the Billboard charts and went on to be certified gold. Coheed and Cambria made another appearance on the Warp Tour and also performed on some European shows.
In 2005, Coheed and Cambria landed their first major record label contract and released their most commercially successful album to date, “Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness”. The album peaked at number seven on the Billboard charts and sold almost a million copies. The album showcased the band's transition from melodic post-hardcore rock to a more progressive rock sound.
Coheed and Cambria began touring again and shared stages with many notable names in the industry, including The Blood Brothers, Head Automatica and Avenged Sevenfold.
The band's latest work is the album “The Afterman,” which has been released in two parts. The first part, “The Afterman: Ascension,” came out in October 2012 and the second part, “The Afterman: Descension,” was released in February 2013.
Overall, Coheed and Cambria has released seven studio albums, three live albums and many other special-edition releases. For their efforts, the band has won some notable accolades, including two MTVU Woodie Awards, one Metal Hammer Award, one Kerrang! Award and a championship title by MTV Musical March Madness.
