Colony House was founded in 2009 in Franklin, Tennessee. Two brothers, Will Chapman and Caleb Chapman made this band with their friend Scott Mills while in high school. Will plays the drums, Scott plays lead guitar whereas Caleb is the lead singer. Music kind of runs in the Chapman family as noted contemporary Christian pop singer and Grammy Award winning artist Steven Curtis Chapman is Will and Caleb's father.
Colony House's name was mutually selected by the band members. It was named after the apartment complex in which the trio at one time used to live in Franklin, Tennessee. The band mainly focuses on indie and alternative rock. The band is often compared with its contemporaries like Talking Heads, Arcade Fire, the Killers and Vampire Weekend. The trio cites bands like Cold War Kids and U2 as its major influences.
Colony House started off by releasing three self-released EPs. Critics term the band's music as pleasantly naïve, bright and optimistic. Colony House made its first ever appearance on TV by performing on NBC's show Late Night with Seth Myers.
To date, the band has released only one studio album, When I Was Younger. This album went on sale in music stores in July 2014. It managed to land at number three on the US Heatseekers Albums chart and at number 154 on the Billboard 200. When I Was Younger also landed at number 34 on the Top Independent Albums chart. It contains fourteen tracks including “Caught Me By Surprise,” “When I Was Younger,” “Second Guessing Games,” “Silhouettes,” “Waiting for My Time to Come,” “Learning How to Love,” “Won't Give Up” and “I Had to Grow Up.”
“Silhouettes” was well-received by the critics as well as the fans. It became the most downloaded song on SiriusXM Alt Nation and received reasonable airplay on alternative rock radio.
Colony House's debut tour is ready to kick off. The band will be performing live with some well-known indie rock bands and artists like Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors, Ben Rector and NeedtoBreathe.
