It was in 1968 when Three Dog Night made a splash entry into the world of music. In the next seven years, they broker many records of popularity and fame. The band started in Los Angeles, California with Danny Hutton, Chuck Negron and Cory Wells as key members. They landed a recording deal with Dunhill Records and released their self-titled debut. With the addition of many new members like Michael Allsup, Floyd Sneed, Joe Schermie and Jimmy Greenspoon; Three Dog Night delivered one hit after the other and remained on the top of the charts for a long time.

Three Dog Night released 10 back to back hit albums from 1968 to 1976. Their debut was followed by Suitable for Framing in 1969. In 1970, they released two studio albums, It Ain't Easy and Naturally. After that, they maintained a track of one album par year, including Harmony, Seven Separate Fools, Cyan, Hard Labor, Coming Down Your Way and American Pastime. Although most of these albums were super successful, they especially hogged limelight because of hit singles Mama Told Me (Not To Come), One, Joy To The World and Black And White.

Three Dog Night remained the most popular band in America from 1969-1974. Their 21 consecutive songs made it to the Billboard Top 40 Hits, and they delivered twelve straight gold LPs. Seven of their songs became NUMERO UNO's and they had sold nearly 50 million records till late 1975. No other music act of that era managed to deliver more Top 10 hits than them.

Besides their unmatched grasp on music arrangements and vocals, a unique feature that worked out well for Three Dog Night was their lineup that featured three separate lead singers, Danny Hutton, Cory Wells and Chuck Negron. They especially got thumps up for their live concerts as they redefined the parameters of live performances with a fully-energetic style. Despite all the passion and fame, the band became the victim of personal differences between lead singers and got disbanded in 1976.

The Three Dog Night remained inactive for almost six years and it seemed that the new generation of music lovers could hardly experience their musical excellence. However, the band started its next innings in 1981, with some changes in the original lineup. That year, they released an EP titled It's A Jungle under a small label, Passport Records. The label went bankrupt resulting in album's failure from sales perspective. However, their hard-core fans welcomed the move of reuniting and liked the SKA inspired stuff from the album.

The second phase of Three Dog Night's success is actually highlighted by their extensive touring routine. From 1986 till now, they have been continuously touring different parts of the region and entertaining concertgoers with their unique brand of music. Their presence on the record scene is maintained with a 2002 release in collaboration with The London Symphony Orchestra, a 35th Anniversary Hits Collection in 2004, and a Greatest Hits Live in 2008. However, the group is working on a new album that will be their first studio album in 24 years.

The current lineup of Three Dog Night consists of Danny Hutton, Cory Wells, Jimmy Greenspoon, Michael Allsup, Paul Kingery and Pat Bautz.
