The foundation of Alabama Shakes was laid in a high school psychology class in Athens, Alabama where musician, Brittany Howard approached fellow acquaintance, Zac Cockreil and asked him if he wanted to try making music together. They both later on recruited drummer, Steve Johnson who at that time worked at the only music store in town. Heath Fogg, a struggling musician at that time also became a fulltime member of the band after hearing the band’s demo in Clearwave Recording Studio.

Some of these consist of garage rock, blues rock, southern rock, rockabilly and Americana. Following the success of their self-titled EP, Alabama Shakes released their first full length album, Boys & Girls. The record received multiple gold certifications in both UK and the US. The album took the 3rd spot on UK Albums Chart and made it to number six on the US Billboard 200.  The record also topped the inaugural UK Official Record Store Chart. On the whole, Boys & Girls did a noticeable business in a number of countries including Germany, Switzerland, Belgium and Ireland.

The song “Hold On” topped many charts and received a gold certification in Canada. A number of well-known internet publications and magazines such as Rolling Stone, Los Angeles Times, Paste Magazine, Pitchfork Media, NME and Slant Magazines have praised the album greatly.  Los Angeles Times stated that, “The Alabama Shakes’ first album, "Boys & Girls," is an electric jolt that anyone who loves blues-based rock music should track down immediately.”  NME stated that, “In many ways Boys & Girls it is as note-perfect an album as you'll hear all year.” Many of the songs from the album including “Hang Loose,” “Hold On” and “I Ain’t the Same” buzzed all over the radio and television.  Their song “Always Alright” is also one of the official soundtracks of the Oscar winning film, Silver Linings Playbook.

After the release of the four-song EP, Alabama Shakes caught the attention of many critics and music lovers worldwide. The band was immediately asked to perform live at the CMJ Music Marathon industry showcase in New York. Following the success of this amazing show, the group was seen performing live at some of the major venues and events of the US such as the Troubadour, Ryman Auditorium, Music Box, the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Bestival and the BottleRock Napa Valley Music Festival.  The band has also made a number of appearances at several television programs like Saturday Night Live, Conan, Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Later… with Jools Holland and many others.

Alabama Shakes saw its formation back in 2009 in Athens, Alabama. Later in November 2011 the group finally secured a record deal with ATO Records in United States and Rough Trade Records in United Kingdom. On April 1, 2012 Alabama Shakes released its debut album called Boys & Girls which gained mainstream popularity both in UK and US.
