Sigur Ros
Icelandic post rock band, Sigur Ros, was formed in August 1994 in Reykjavik, the same day when Birgisson's, the lead vocalist of the band, sister was born.
The name of Birgisson's sister is Sigurros and this where the name of the band was taken from. The band is comprised of vocalist and guitarist Jonsi Birgisson, Bassist Georg Holm, and the drummer Agust Gunnarsson.
Band's debut album was released in 1997 titled Von, after they signed their first record deal with Bad Taste. Von, meaning Hope in English, was then followed by their second remixes album titled Von brigo, which came out in 1998.
The same year, the band's current line-up welcomed the addition of Kjartan Sveinsson as the Key Board player of the band. Prior to joining the band, Sveinsson took the musical training, which makes him the only member of the band equipped with such training.
Sigur Ros acquired their global recognition after their 1999's release Agust byrjun, means An Alright Start in English. The success, however, wasn't immediate; as it took about 2 years for the band to earn its reputation worldwide.
As the band's reputation established their songs started being featured upon several TV series and movies. On the hit TV series 24, CSI and CSI: Miami, their song was featured as well as on a hit Hollywood flick, Vanilla Sky.
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, a 2004's release, also featured Sigur Ros track titled Staralfur. Another one of their songs titled Samskeyti was featured on another movie by Gregg Araki, Mysterious Skin.
Following the release of Sigur Ros's Agust byrjun, Birgisson established his reputation as a guitarist as well and became known for his signature style of playing guitar.
In September 2005, the band released its fourth album titled Takk, meaning Thanks in English. As compared to their previous album, the band in this album took the leap towards Rock genre, as they made greater use of guitar in their tracks.
In the November of 2005, the remake of one of their songs from their debut album was released titled Hafsol along with the 2nd single from their album Takk called Hoppipolla.
That second single of the band was also featured on several occasions such as; in 2006 it was used on the closing credits of the 2006 FA Cup Final as well as on the BBC's advertisement of its coverage during the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
Hoppipolla was also featured during the coverage of 2006 Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race on ITV. The demand for the single raised more when the song was also featured on the trailer of Hollywood Blockbuster Children of Men as well as in the final scene of another movie titled Penelope.
Sigur Ros also scheduled to release Seglopur EP on May, but high demand of Hoppipolla made them to move the release date to July of 2006. Three new tracks Refur, O friour and Kafari were also feature on their E.P.
After they released their E.P, Sigur Ros went on the world tour and played headlining tours in Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Hong Kong. After the tour, the band performed in several free concerts throughout their homeland during July and August of 2006.
They later returned to USA once again in February of 2007. Later on November 5, 2007 Sigur Ros released their compilation album titled Hvarf-Heim.
Band's fifth regular studio album came out recently on June 23, 2008, and mostly received positive reviews by the critics. As in this album, the band made more use of guitar than the strings, hence it was considered to be unique as compared to their previous releases. The album also featured the band's first song with English lyrics titled All Alright.
Sigur Ros is also schedule to be performing a headlining act at the Latitude Festival 2008 as well as Splendour in the Grass Festival that is scheduled in 2008 in Byron Bay, Australia.
The gibberish in which the band's songs are sung by Birgisson is called Vonlenska. Vonlenska according to the band's website is described as the gibberish that fits with the music.
Apart from that it's not a language, instead it is comprised of meaningless syllables, which are used by Birgisson many times throughout each song.
