The band consists of two long time collaborators, Nick Littlemore from the electronic dance group "Pnau" and Luke Steele from the alternative rock act "The Sleepy Jackson". The front man of The Empire of the Sun is Luke Steele, who wears a golden headpiece that is similar to a Mayan deity, while performing.

The duo formed The Empire of the Sun in Sydney, Australia in 2008. Though the name may seem inspired from the J.G. Ballard novel, both the musicians have denied this. According to them, the name was based on the duo's travels around the world to places where people worshiped the sun, henceforth the duo called themselves "The Empire of he Sun."
