Army Navy is Los Angeles based indie rock band that was formed in 2004. It comprises of Louie Schultz, Douglas Randall and Justin Kennedy. The band started off with melody driven and sugary power pop songs, taking cue from the likes of Teenage Club and The Posies. Army Navy was formed by Kennedy, who left Seattle and moved to Los Angeles in early 2000s in order to play with Ben Gibbard, the front-man of Death Cab for Cutie, who at that time was playing for Pinwheel, the band. Now with their latest songs, the band is hitting the road for a tour, you can attend their concert with your Army Navy tickets.
Army Navy started off playing in local clubs, until they finally got attention of the producer Adam Lasus. They started working with him on their very first album, “The Fever Zone”, on which the drums were provided by the influential Pete Thomas, belonging to Elvis Costello & the Attractions. Among many reviews that it received, majority labeled it as “upbeat, energetic music” by fresh faces, which are quite refreshing for the listeners of indie rock genre. However, following the trend, the band has combined all the elements necessary to make the audiences enjoy their music, which was done nicely enough for a debut album. Army Navy’s debut album received mix comments, and also got a lot of airplay on West Coast’s KEXP radio station. They became known for their energetic and zippy music. Their music was selected as various soundtracks for television shows as well as films.
After the completion of The Fever Zone, Douglas Randall took the job of being the permanent percussionist for the band. In support of their debut album, the band toured across the country alongside Wolfmother and The Arctic Monkeys. Army Navy has contributed songs to films ‘Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist’ and ‘Beastly’.
Army Navy announced that the band will be releasing their second studio album titled “The Last Place” in July of 2011. The album was released on 12th of July. The song The Long Goodbye earned good reviews almost instantly. The album’s songs are written by Kennedy himself, and as titled “lovelorn album” it is full of songs that portray love and heartbreak. The lyrics are very much close to Kennedy’s heart, since they are based on his personal feelings for someone.
Army Navy have been referred to as “the typical Los Angeles band that is made up of dudes traveling rarified circles” by Rolling Stone. Their combo of raw emotions and upbeat tones are bound to mesmerize and touch the hearts of people who have been fans of the likes of Big Star and Cheap Trick once. These bittersweet, brash guitar bands have spoken to the listeners for years, Army Navy being inclusion to the list. They have been lucky in way that even before they earned a name in the music industry; their songs were chosen as soundtracks, like Right Back Where We Started From landing in ‘Shrek Forever After’ trailer.
‘The Last Place’ took six months of hard work before it was ready to be released. Based on real life experience, Kennedy keeps the identity of his love affair a secret, giving a more mysterious aura to the band. Hence, as soon as its release, the album started receiving rave reviews from critics as well as fans. Eventually, the band landed in Rolling Stone magazine’s featured column “Artist to Watch”.
