Donna the Buffalo originated from New York in 1989. Suggested by a friend, the band stuck to this name and calls its followers 'the Herd.' They covered songs of other musicians as well as play original tracks. The band consists of lead vocalist Tara Nevins, guitarist and occasionally back up vocalist Jeb Puryear, drummer Mark Raudabaugh, the keyboard player David McCracken and bassist Kyle Spark. Nevins and Puryear do the main songwriting for the band. Past members included vocalist Jim Miller, drummers Tom Gilbert, Jimmy Triplett and Shane Lamphier and keyboardists Richie Stearns, Joe Thrift and Kathy Ziegler.
Donna the Buffalo started their professional career with the release of The White Tape in 1989. Followed with The Red Tape in 1991, The Purple One in 1993 and The Ones You Love in 1996, the band gradually and steadily garnered fan following. They released Rockin' in the Weary Land in 1998, Positive Friction in 2000, Live From the American Ballroom in 2001 and Life's a Ride in 2005 and reached out to wider audiences. Released in 2008, the album Silverlined rose to number 8 on Americana Music Charts with its disc's tight production and steady sound appreciated by the fans. The band has recently released much anticipated 2013 album Tonight, Tomorrow and Yesterday. Featuring 14 songs with captivating rhythms and thought-provoking messages, the album has received positive reviews mostly.
Donna the Buffalo is one of the founding bands of Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music and Dance. Due to the band's own dedication to live music, they also host Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival frequently and perform as headliners at The Great Blue Heron Music Festival in Sherman. They play regularly at Suwanee Springfest & Magnolia Fest in Florida, MerleFest in North Carolina, All Good in West Virginia, Del Fest in Maryland, Targhee Bluegrass Festival in Wyoming and many others. The band was also featured in a documentary titled On The Bus co-directed by Bud Selig and Dave Sale. Some of the band's music has also been licensed by Surrealist artist Yanni Osmond and his partner Spanky the Woman Tamer for their new cartoon titled Living Evil.
The band draws its inspiration from old time music festivals of the south contributing towards drawing town and counties together. They take great pride in cherishing American heritage and promoting it. What started with mostly groove-oriented, socially conscious and danceable music has been evolved into an electric mix of rock, folk, reggae and country praised by critics and fans alike. Encore praised them saying that they have "earned a reputation as one of the most respected, eclectic and hardest-working acts today." Edd Hurt with the Nashville Scene wrote about the band, "Folkies with a superior sense of rhythm are rare enough, but folkies with a good beat and a healthy disrespect for eclectic clichés are a national treasure".
Donna the Buffalo is on tour again remaining independent as one of the industry's most diverse roots-music bands. You do not have to be one of 'the Herds' or even long time root music fan to enjoy their melodies. With Nevis' distinctive fiddle and accordion work and Puryear's solid guitar sounds, Donna the Buffalo produces undeniable masterpieces. Buy Donna the Buffalo tickets and embrace the soul-touching, true and tuneful music of the band.
