Black Stone Cherry is a full-throttle modern rock band that comprises of four key members, Chris Robertson on Vocals/Guitar, Ben Wells on Guitar/Vocals, Jon Lawhon on Bass/Vocals and Drummer John Fred Young. John and Chris Robertson have known each other since kindergarten.
John is the son of Kentucky Headhunters guitarist Richard Young who was one of the producers of their first album and an executive producer of the second one. The band was formed in the summer of 2001 in a small town in Kentucky.
The band got its name ?Black Stone Cherry? from Blackstone Cigars, which come in different flavors, including cherry. Their music is as intoxicating as the cigarette and they make you fall in love with their music the very first time you hear them.
Black Stone Cherry has made it big in the music world in a short span of time. Their starting, however, was not as big. The band hails from a small rural town Edmonton, located in south central Kentucky in the middle of a dry county.Since the place was very small, there was very little to do there for the four members of Black Stone Cherry other then music.
Their love for music arose as a result of rich musical background of their town and families. While John?s father is a founding member of the Grammy Award-winning Kentucky Headhunters, his Uncle was a jazz drummer.Chris? grandfather used to build musical instruments by hand and gave him guitar to play music. He learned his first chords from his dad did jamming with the principal of his school.
Black Stone Cherry?s Lead vocalist and guitarist Chris Robertson played music together throughout high school. They met drummer John Fred Young and then guitarist Ben Wells.
The four officially became Black Stone Cherry on June 4, 2001. They took over a century-old and rehearsed there relentlessly. There passion for music made them to develop some very interesting tunes and they started taking it more seriously.
The band initially started off by doing gigs at old-time music clubs in the area. Their music had a fresh feel to it and after a short while, they gained a large following in the town. They were inspired by the likes of Soundgarden, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, The Black Crowes and AC/DC; but never copied their stuff and came up with their own innovative sounds.
Black Stone Cherry started signing with management company In De Goot. They attracted interest from Roadrunner Records that signed them for a music album. The band recorded its debut album for Roadrunner Records.
The album titled Black Stone Cherry was released in 2006. It captured the kinetic energy and force of the band and proved that they are true southern originals. It contained hit tracks like ?Lonely Train,? ?Hell and High Water? and ?Rain Wizard.?
At the time of the release of this album, nobody in the group was older than twenty three years. Their young minds and fresh approach was reflected in the work and the lads were highly appreciated for there first effort.
?Folklore and Superstition? was the second offering of the band. Released in 2008, the album hints at the arrival of next generation of super talented musicians that will soon rule the music world with their impeccable charm and energy. This rollicking collection of amazing rock songs has earned them hands up by the listeners and the critics alike.
The album has a distinctive approach and the songs are more varied in their approach. ?Please Come In? and ?Things My Father Said? are among those rocking numbers that helped the band to crack the Top 30 of the Billboard album chart. Besides this, the album was highly appreciated for its regional flavor and swampy sound effects.
Black Stone Cherry has established a massive fan base for otself in a span of short period. The band is becoming more and more popular with every passing day. Today, rock lovers from all over America recognize their talent.
People adore their music, however, it is nomatch to the love and support they received at their hometown when they visited it sometimes ago.
Over 1500 people packed into the local middle school gym on their homecoming concert, and everyone from eight to eighty embraced them with love. The band has also done tours with the likes Buckcherry, Hinder and Staind.
The Black Stone Cherry is perfect rock outfit with guitars that rage and a shuddering rhythmic attack. They are straight-ahead, in-your-face rock & roll band that tells the truth and sometimes stretches it beyond your imagination.
