Whistler Blackcomb is perhaps the one of the most famous and definitely the largest North American ski resort located in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. The resort hosts huge flocks of skiing enthusiasts every year, with the number increasing successively. Before merger, Whistler Mountain and Blackcomb Ski Resort used to be two separate resorts, but after merger, the resulting resort is undoubtedly the largest ski resort in North America. The Whistler Mountain Resort began its operations back in 1966 in the month of February while being equipped with double chair lift, gondola lift, along with the T Bar. With the passage of time, several additions were made to the resort namely being of the Roundhouse, Blue & Green chair lifts followed by the addition of Olive & Orange chairlifts. The new Ski Area of Blackcomb Mountain started its operations back in 1980, the same year when the Whistler Village was opened. Along the original Area of Whistler, there's a creek the crosses right through the center, which is why that specific area was started to be known as Whistler Creek. Following these major additions, several state of the art modifications were also carried out on the several growing chairlifts of the resorts. The merger between the two resorts occurred back in 1997, after the owner of Blackcomb Mountain, Intrawest also bought the Whistler Mountain Ski Resort. Also with the merger, came a number of other modifications and improvements to the resort including Peak 2 Peak Gondola, Timing Flats Express.
The resort also houses its renowned Whistler Mountain Bike Park that was made operational back in 1998. The park attracts substantial number of bikers from different regions, hence being the one of the most favorite biking terrains among the bikers. The park is further divided up into lower and upper zones, namely being Fitzsimmons Zone and Garbanzo Zone respectively. Also located on the resort is the Whistler Blackcomb Coca Cola Tube Park that has been a great success after its opening, during the 2005-06 Blackcomb Ski Season. The resort also provides the ample amount of hiking opportunities and offers the Alpine Walk, Overlord Trail, Treeline Trail, Lakeside Loop, Marmot Trail, and Decker Loop. Whistler Blackcomb resort doesn't disappoint the golfing enthusiasts as it houses Whistler Golf Course, Chateau Whistler golf club, Nicklaus North Golf Course, Furry Creek Golf, and Big Sky Golf and Country Club. With rest of its attractions being put aside, Whistler Blackcomb's Peak 2 Peak Alpine Experience duly meet the expectations of all the visitors, visiting year round. Whistler Blackcomb Resort is scheduled to host 2010 winter games, the first event of which is scheduled to be held on February 16 2010.
