Van Wert, the smallest US city is located in the state of Ohio. It is the ranked 37th in land area and 7th in population among the other US states. It was the seventeenth state to be admitted in the Union. The name of the state, 'Ohio', was derived from the Seneca word 'ohiyo', meaning 'large creek'. It is nicknamed the Buckeye State due to the abundance of Buckeye trees. In relation to the nickname of the state, the Ohioans are called Buckeyes. In 1932, the Van Wert Men's Garden Club determined that Van Wert should provide some form of entertainment for the large number of visitors touring the many commercial Peony farms which flourished in the Van Wert area. During the 1930's, the Festival became a major event with crowds estimated at over 100,000 people. The CrossRoads Festival is also a major attraction. The Van Wert County Fair is the most anticipated festival of the year. Several big names perform in the fair including the likes of Pink and Dave Mathews Band etc. Dickenson Park, Hiestand Woods, Jubilee Park, Garden of the Senses and Smiley Park along with several other picnic spots provide quality family entertainment.
