The state of Indiana is the 19th admitted state in the Union. The name simply means 'Indian Land'. The residents of Indiana are called Hoosiers. Valparaiso is located at the junctions of Interstate 80/90, US Route 30, State Road 2 and State Road 49. The site of present day Valparaiso was included in the purchase of land from the Potawatomi Indians by the US Government in October 1832. Valparaiso was a forest land and in the beginning of this century and was named Valparaiso in 1837 after Valpara?so, Chile. Being very close to the Lake Michigan and Indian dunes, the city of Valparaiso often hosts hikers, swimmers and campers. The city is dotted by a multitude of parks and shopping centers. On every first Saturday, aft the 1st of March, which is the Labor Day, the Popcorn Festival is held. It is held in the honor of Orville Redenbacher, the founder of the local popcorn factory and a former resident of the city. He himself took part in most of the popcorn parades before he died in 1995. Brauer Museum of Art is a major attraction. Memorial Opera House is a massive magnet for music fans from all over the world. One of the big entertainers of the city is the Chicago Street Theatre which is operated and controlled by the local Community Theater Guild. It is a very friendly little town, where everyone knows everybody. It is famous for its plenty of shopping opportunities and lots of outdoor life.
